Southington -Those who enter the
courtyard at the Ruben E. Thalberg
Elementary School this spring will
see a a variety of plants "popping
up", thanks to a joint program
involving the fourth-graders at the
school, Agway, Geremia Garden
Shop, and Teresa Mello, owner of
DreamScape Exteriors, LLC.

Fourth grade students from each of
the classes took time out of their
schedules Tuesday morning to
learn gardening techniques with
Mello and even help plant many of
the 250 perennials, annuals, and
bulbs donated by local businesses.
As they came outside Mello
explained the difference between
perenials, annuals, and bulbs, then
showed the children how to plant
each.

As the San Remo Bakery settles into
a new location, its windows are
decorated for the holidays. Teresa
Mello of DreamScape Exteriors, LLC
painted the store windows with two
five-tier wedding cakes.

When Mello stopped by to tell
co-owners Rita and Santo Motta
about her window paintings, they
were impressed. "Once I saw the
picture of a wedding cake, I knew I
wanted something like it," says Rita.

"Teresa outlined the cake, then
started painting," says Rita. "The
painting was unbeleivable, more
beautiful that I imagined."

Mello is working a landscape
job (pictured) for a client on
Shuttle Meadow Ave, planting
deliberately, the way an artist
might paint a mural. No
surprise here.

"I was an art major in college,"
says Mello. "When I'm not
landscaping I'm painting
murals or birdhouses."

Before Mello started her own
business, she was a general
manager for a service
company. For years, she ran
companies for other peole,
taking over their problems and
stresses, and organizing or
restructuring the departments.
Yet, she always wanted her
own company. At one point,
she even considered becoming
a business consultant. But, her
love of the outdoors and
wanting to make something
beautiful out of it prevailed.

"She's doing a great job," says
customer John Zazzaro,
Andrew House Administrator,
She created an oasis here. My
staff and residents are raving
about it." He said Mello has
agreed to return to Andrew
House and maintain the
landscaping intil he gets the
building "fully grown in the
way I like."

"Teresa Mello & DreamScape Designs -nice
job!"

"I am so proud of the people I meet in the
Green Industry. Apart from attempting to build
their businesses and provide for their families,
just about every one of them opens their hands
and hearts when the situation requires.
Here's the latest incident I learned about:
Teresa Mello, of New Britain, took it upon
herself recently to beautify the 15'x20' sign to
Martha Hart Park in that city. Mello often drives
by the park, and apparently the lack of color
there got to her and she volunteered to fix it up
and maintain it. Nice going Teresa Mello. You
sound like the kind of neighbor and business
person that would be a credit to any
community."

For several years, professional
landscaper Teresa Mello would drive by
the entrance sign to Martha Hart Park at
the corner of Corbin and Shuttle
Meadow Ave and imagined what it
could look like.

"It's something I always wanted to do. I
didn't know it would be possible to do
in New Britain", adding that she was
referred to the Parks Dept Director Bill
DeMaio, who was thriller to have the
help. "She owns her own company
landscaping company and wants to
plant shrubs and perennials to make
the sign look nice. It's very nice of her
to do that," Bill added. "She has the
skills and wants to give back to the
community."
